Operating out of two central locations in the eastern Kentucky coalfields, CAPs Elderly Services seeks to address the needs of the impoverished elderly within their 11 county service area. Services are provided within four main components.
VISITATION Having someone to visit to listen to your stories or concerns to read to you to say a prayer or give a gentle hug means so much when you are isolated and lonely. To many of the elderly a visit from our staff becomes the highlight of their week.
REFERRAL/SUPPORT Staff often find elderly individuals who need dental, medical, or vision care; who need to be advocated for in order to receive entitled assistance; or who require assistance in understanding or paying their bills. Staff actively assists these individuals in acquiring the services they need. For those elderly who are living in substandard housing, staff also sees that a referral is made to Housing for any repairs, ramps, adaptations, or construction needed.
TRANSPORTATION The majority of the elderly we serve have no means of transportation. Staff tries to assist them in looking at various options for transportation, but in most cases there are no other options to be found. For those individuals, program staff provide transportation to medical appointments, grocery stores, and other necessary sites.
PRESCRIPTION ASSISTANCE When you are living in poverty with a minimal income, even paying your share of the cost of medications can be impossible. As a result, many elderly individuals will either not fill their medications or not take them as directed in order to stretch the supply out. CAP provides staff who assists the elderly in obtaining their medications either free or at a reduced cost, by working with their physician and pharmaceutical companies.
Each year the Elderly Services program provided on-going services to hundreds of elderly individuals, and the demand continues to increase.
